About Clavering

Lying in the Uttlesford district of Essex, this village of ancient lineage is currently under threat from proposed expansion plans for Stansted Airport, like many of the north-west Essex sites.

There has been a settlement here since Roman times, owing to its position on higher ground near the confluence of the River Stort and the King’s water stream. The name of the village was first found in the 11th Century, spelt as ‘Claefring’, meaning ‘the place where clover grows.’ It once boasted its own moated castle, which was, according to legend, visited by King Edward the Confessor at the dedication of a chapel to St John the Evangelist. The Bury, built in 1304 to replace the castle as Clavering’s manorial centre, is one of the best surviving examples of a medieval aisled hall.

Situated close to Saffron Walden market town and 20 miles south of Cambridge city, Clavering boasts seven greens, various timber-framed houses throughout the village, the medieval church of St Mary and St Clement, and two pubs – The Cricketers and the Fox and Hounds. The Cricketers is owned by TV chef Jamie Oliver’s father, and is also Oliver’s birthplace.
