About Orwell

A winding village centred round a rise in the South Cambridgeshire countryside, Orwell is situated about 7 miles north of Royston. Its north-east boundary follows a chalk ridge.

Orwell has one public house, The Chequers, and a village hall as well as the recently saved and renovated Chapel Orchard grounds. The Clunch Pit, in the heart of Orwell, was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1985, and is managed as a grassland habitat by local organisations. It is also used as an unofficial village gathering point, and as a venue for outdoor celebrations, such as the annual village barbeque.
